$17-$20: Mid-priced marvels

Zinfandel 2011, Amador County, Easton, California red, $21.25, SAQ #897132. «Sweet fruit, yes, but sweet wine, no. A great example. This is great zin — powerful, rich, brambly fruit that shows notes of black cherry and other black berries. Complex, great length, so approachable. Finally, a zin that isn’t over-ripened. Bring on the barbecue! Serve at 16 C. Drink now-2018. Food-pairing idea: Baby-back ribs with spicy barbecue sauce.»

$22 and up: For a treat

Marsannay 2010, Les Aiges Pruniers, Fougeray de Beauclair, France white, $26.40, SAQ #11890918. «This is balance in chardonnay. A high-wire act from this northern Burgundian appellation. Chablis-type tightness, with the amplitude of the richer Beaune-styled wines. Luxury with speed. Bravo — if this is where oaked chardonnay is going, sign me up. Serve at 8-10 C. Drink now-2016. Food-pairing idea: apéritif, lobster.»
